So, I caught up to LotS and re-watched several other eps in s1.

For some reason I always forget just how violent and how dark the show is. I think it is largely due to the fact that deaths is so common place in this show; people die, often horribly and more than likely at the hand of our heroes. It isn’t because the heroes want to kill people but they do so to protect themselves. It – well, it is almost refreshing to watch a show where killing to protect oneself isn’t moralized, isn’t considered wrong. Protect the innocent, feel regret at the deaths, make no excuses for those deaths, but never let it get to you. Sure, I could be giving the show too much credit, but the way they handle deaths; deaths of important characters, deaths of random person and even deaths of children – well, it feels like they have built this very consistent and ruthless world view. You kill them before they can kill you, and the thing that makes me bemused is that the main characters still come across as sympathetic because they are really nice people. Just people who are perfectly OK with killing you if you are trying to kill them.

The other thing about LotS that continues to surprise me is the awesome female cast. Not just Khalan or Cara, but even bit-players who have maybe 2 lines, and guest stars who comes across as peace loving nuns are all WILLING to stand and fight. To protect themselves, to protect others (more often than not Richard.) It makes me happy that the women of this show can be nice, compassionate, comes across as somebody’s middle-aged aunt and YET still carry big fricking ninja-stars to kill. Hell, one of the coolest scenes I have seen of this show is this woman who picked up a giant rock and basically stated that if she was going to die she was going to die fighting and then later on willing to SAVE her enemy. It just makes me HAPPY! Like kick-ass women is just accepted, assumed and nothing to even blink about. That of course, women would fight, why wouldn’t they, and that of course women comes in ALL forms; fighters, healers, peasants, leaders, prostitutes, evil dominatrix, and ALL of them have their own agencies. The whole thing just makes me HAPPY!

Finally, I’m still surprised that I LIKE Richard. He is just honestly this NICE guy, and I think I figured out why I like him. Richard is like the ‘nice’ shounen hero type. You know the one who is nice, polite, humble and willing to protect people. However, unlike the shounen hero Richard will KILL! Like, yes, killing is bad, but sometime you have to kill to protect those who need it. And Richard, despite the impressive kill count, isn’t BITTER, he is still willing to help those in needs, still willing to trust others, still want to protect. So yeah, I still like the guy.

It is just sad that this show isn’t the show of my heart. *SIGHS*.

I WAS NOT EXPECTING IT, AND THE WHOLE THING WAS AWESOME!

I'm actually really enjoying this series, which really surprises me. Sure, i got into it because of the Mord'Sith but I'm staying for Khalan, Cara and the other awesome female characters.
