Ten rules for writing fiction

Via tigertrapped - Ten rules for writing fiction - fabulous article which I have saved.

It is interesting how many authors on the list talk about or imply that they are not natural writers, that it is all about discipline, putting words on paper. That writing, good writing doesn't come easy, and at the end of the day it is you and the page.

It is kind of inspiring.

My major problem with writing fiction is that I find it extremely difficult to get words on the page. Writing 1000 words for me can take days. I find it difficult to write descriptions, I find it difficult to write dialogue, hell, I find it difficult to keep things in tense. In short, every word is like a battle for me, and I always find it awe-inspiring how others can churn out 1000, 2000 hell 5000 words in a day.

I'm not a natural writer, and I will be the first one to state that I don't have the discipline to write 1000 words a day. But 500, 200, well, yes I can do that.

On a good day, I can churn out a lot of words. I have not had a good day for some time now, but that's neither here nor there.

On a not-good day, I figure it like this: Any word that I write is one more word than zero. Therefore, if I can get a sentence further towards my goal of the Next Cool Scene, I win.

Entire blighted dinner party scene went like that. (And now, since my dang book's too big, I had to cut the sub-plot that the scene supported, find a different place for a particular concept that I needed for later, and generally butcher the thing I sweated blood on. Bah. I'll put it back in the Director's Cut someday. >_> )

I want to be a writer, but writing is so difficult for me that it is just nice to have this confirmation that not all authors are naturally gifted, that yeah, it is difficult and sometime 10 words is a good day.

Good luck on your Director's Cut!

I found it fascinating how all the different authors when it came down to it had the same advice - WRITE.

Thanks!
