QUESTION TO THE F-LIST

What is a hipster (in reference to a person)? Is this some new fangled term that I'm suppose to know? Is it American? Do Australians use it?

I feel so out of touch.

I believe it refers to types of young urban people (generally from a middle class background) who indulge in the alternative scene? That is, alternative music/movie/fashion etc. Non-mainstream, I guess. Urbandictionary.com has a pretty good definition.

It's kinda the latest fad. Hipsters usually wear tight jeans and fedoras. This year's Wai-Con was filled with hipster scum. Matt Smith is a hipster.
Typical Hipster Scum:

I'm confused - isn't that like most of the youth population, and wasn't skinny jeans emo (or Goth) or whatever?

It seems I'm always missing out on the fad. (But FEDORAS are always awesome!)

"Hipster" has been the word for "trendy young person" since the early 00s in North America - I have no idea of usage in Australia, but they definitely do exist there. ^^; It tends to overlap with liberal, well-educated, urban, and white. They are typically more proactive/twee than slackers, and poorer/younger than yuppies.

Various things that are typically considered hipster, in no particular order:

* indie rock and electro
* clothing retailers such as American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, Uniqlo (in North America)
* indie comics and movies with similar sensibility, such as Juno or Scott Pilgrim
* reading Pitchfork
* taking "artistic" Polaroid/Super 8/Holga-ish photos and posting them to Tumblr
* for the better informed, having opinions on stuff like Creative Commons, eating local, public transportation planning, Obama's digital strategy
* consuming certain products and brands ironically, such as Pabst Blue beer

Fedoras and Palestinian scarves have, thankfully, gone out of fashion. XD; But yes they were huge hipster markers in 2005-2008 or so (...and guess who started that nonsense? Only the frigging Libertines...).

A person in NYC, LA, or some other big city who:

* works in some internet- and/or media- and/or marketing-related job
* has a Tumblr or a music blog
* rides a bike (particularly a modified fixed-gear)
* wears clothes of European or Japanese high street shop make
* wears a weird hat or intentionally frumpy glasses frames
* goes to concerts regularly
* participates in Facebook-planned events such as headphone raves in the subway or shopping cart races at midnight on downtown streets
* feels Radiohead is the most important band of this century thus far

I'm trying to be as neutral as possible because this mostly describes me, of course. XD; But as an uncritical lifestyle it is very mockable (see here).

HAHAHA! I'm glad you said it 'cos I was like, 'Hey that sounds like -'.

So, somebody who knows a bit about the internet and used to be considered 'uncool'? Gotcha.

But you are correct they definitely exists. The amount of skinny jeans in the Australian MTV/music scene is kind of ridic.

This is something with which I must fully agree.

Like duh, there's a reason I have at least two in my wardrobe. Hm, I think I've just decided on what I'm wearing tomorrow.

OK! This is much more informative. And so much LOLs! SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW!

I can understand why sections of the community find them both an irritant and a provider of amusement.

HAHAHAHAHA!
