Election - Australia 2010

Well - Australia have a hung parliament, neither of the major parties managed to gain 76 seats needed to form a government. The Balance of the Senate is currently held by nine (perhaps, or is it 1 Greens and 5 Independents) Green Senators, and the deals that will be made with the unaligned MPs in the House of Representatives is going to the interesting.

Honestly, this is the best result that could have happened. Yes, it means some serious negotiations (and potentially more back stabbing), but when you have two major parties that have been spinning shit for since before the election was announced. Yeah, happy news.

Wikipedia tells me that we have not had a hung parliament since the Second World War. This election really does speak on the psychology of the current Australia.

Greens are now a significant power in the Senate in their own right. In the House of Representatives the Greens MP will hold balance of power with four Independents and be able to help decide who becomes government.

Like the last federal election I decided to sleep through the news update. Too tense otherwise.

Let's just say I threw a little party when I logged on the internet and read my flist.

YAY!

Maybe I'm being foolishly optimistic, but perhaps this might result in some meaningful legislation being created. Now both major parties need to really debate and truly compromise - and they have to do so with the Greens and Independents (no surprise where my vote went). I agree with you, this really is a good result. Much, much better than my nightmare of waking up today to find Tony Abbott had won.

... How did I NOT know you lived in Australia? The brains, it is obviously not working.

Gods - if I had woken up to Tony Abbott PM I might have gone to my kitchen cupboard and proceeded to break things.

*giggle snort* no biggie (I thought most people might have guessed given how many aust models I shoved into my bandom bigbang fic).

I think I would have cried if Tony Abbott had won. He's such a snake. Oh god, and how he would have gloated. That would have been just too much.
