Waiting + Creativity

Hate waiting. So bored.

On the strange things in life - have started drawing again, nothing major, just chicken scratches of characters and playing with perspective. It has been over a decade since I drew anything seriously. As in actual canvas paintings and Lino prints. The degradation of my artistic skills is kind of interesting and depressing at the same time.

Psychology says that it takes ten years to become a master of a skill, I wonder how long it takes for it to degrade.

Well my guitar teacher told me that 1 day not playing guitar cancels out two weeks of practice.

On the other hand: Muscle memory.

That is really interesting - so how does muscle memory and cognitive skills connect?

I mean I can see why physical sports would equal muscle memory, but what of igo? I mean how does muscle memory influence your moves?

Well muscle memory doesn't exactly lend itself to cognitive skills in go, shougi, chess, etc... because those things don't really have anything really that repetitive. But in an art style such as manga or comic drawing you'll be drawing the same characters over and over again trying to be consistent. Take Kishimoto, how many times do you think he's had to have drawn Naruto, by now he could probably draw a decent sketch hanging upside down while blindfolded.

But the way muscle memory works, even if you stop doing an action you have done repetitively over a long time the synapses don't fully revert back to their original state. So if you return to performing that action again your body picks it up again faster than when you had first learned it.

That makes so much more sense.

Theoretically I should still be able to play tennis.
