WHY HAVEN'T ANYBODY TOLD ME HOW AWESOME THIS SERIES IS? Rylan Givens is the definition of badass. Just! EEEEE! He reminds me a bit of a young Clint Eastwood, except more relate-able.

Another show to add to my cable watch list. Current List.
  • Sons of Anarchy - SEASON 4, BABY. SEASON 4!!!

  • Spartacus - OMFG! YES! S2 will happen!

  • Justified - OMFG! This show is so hilarious and badass.

  • Game of Thrones - WHY AM I WATCHING THIS? I know what happens to my fav characters. WHY?!!!

  • Community - OMFG! I have seen 6 eps of this show, and I will WATCH ALL OF IT!!!! Not a cable show, but much love nonetheless.

  • Archer - This show MAKES me laugh uncontrollably. Love it to bits!

ETA: Yes, I have removed Dexter from my cable TV watch list. Season 5 was so disappointing that I have given up on this show. To give you an idea of how badly I disliked the season - I was one of those few individuals who didn't mind season 2.

Sons of Anarchy!!!! I love that show too. Yesterday I was having this huge discussion with my father (who hates it with a passion) about how wonderfully it's written it is and how rare it is to see women characters who are so three dimensional and with such agency.

OMFG! EXACTLY!

The other day I was trying to explain to people why I love Sons of Anarchy and how so much of it was due to the way they depict women. And it is exactly as you say, it is due their own agency - Gemma, Tara and the whole host of women on this show who depend on the men in their lives but have their own agency. Yes, the Club is this overwhelming force in their lives, but beyond the men's world there is this world that's completely dominated by the women with their own goals and motivations that is separated from the men's lives, and I LOVE that.

AND! How there are so many different women on this show. And whether men or women, they are brought together by their love (their need) for SAMCRO.

OH! AND how ALL the male characters on this show respect the women, and in many ways, defer to them when it comes to certain issues. OK, I know with the whole porn thing, the whole biker club thing and everything else, that the issue of respect for women can be a bit gray, but honestly, even the female bit players on this show are doing what they are doing for their own reasons (their own agencies). They are never there just for the men. And that is why I can love this show but not The Sopranos.

OH! Also, did you notice how NOT once has they show shown female nudity. Like, not at all.

Just gods, I LOVE this show to very much!

Yes - I love all the different women and how they more than placecards or pretty faces. They all have roles and lifes and are all important in the scheme of things. It's so refreshing to see. My father didn't really get how rare that was until I asked him how many other shows have more than one female character and how often do shows with more than one female characters intereact with the world, each other (and not about men) and have fully drawn lives and backgrounds. It sounds such a simple requirement, but really, I can count on one hand how many shows represent women three dimensionally.

I love how all the men respect the women. I'd even say Gemma is the real authority in the club. At the end of the day Jax's and Clay look to her and she knows it.

Oh, and Lyla and Maureen! Any other show would make them into damsels in destress or Mary Magdalenes or villians. But they have such deepth and I love how the show handled them (the scenes between Gemma and Maureen were some of the best in S3).

I can't wait for season 4.

WORD to everything you say.

In regards to the question you asked your dad - I have used similar questions when getting (mostly) male audience to understand why I love certain shows while others leaves me feeling creeped out.

As they say, Gemma is the Queen of the Bikers, and there is a reason why they went after her at the end of season 1/2. She holds the club together.

LYLA and MAUREEN! EEE! Just how well was Lyla's character development handled? Oh, man I was terrified it was going to horribly wrong, but wow, they just made her so real and so fucking amazing, and she was such a part of the club near the end of season 3 there. LOVES! Maureen, JUST - her and Gemma give me hearts in my eyes. I love how they work so well together, that it didn't dissolve into a bitch fight, and just, how amazing were they?! Also, one of my FAVOURITE scenes out of this whole series was right after Gemma and Maureen walked in on Jax and Trinity, and how Maureen said, "That little whore." And Gemma was like, "Yeah. He is." JUST OMFG! THAT ONE SCENE SUMMARISED THE CORE OF WHY I LOVE THIS SHOW TO BITS!

Also, HOW AMAZING WAS JUNE "CRAZY EYES" STAHL?

Season 4 is September! It is going to be awesome.

On first glance it is such a male show. It took me a while to see beyond the exterior and give it a second change (I'm so glad I did).

Lyla's character development was handled so well. It was really amazing how the show wrote her. She's just so real and strong and flawed and I love how her relationship with Opie, Gemma and Tara played out and how it took time to develop and grow. I mean, I love Gossip Girl (it's so pretty), but their story lines are like one episod long and then it's over and forgotten (I remember Blair telling Jenny off for trying to break up Serena and Nate, saying their relationship was epic - it was two episods old). But on SoA? It feels so organic.

Mine too!

Oh my god! Stahl was amazing! She was the sort of character you couldn't help but feel compelled to watch. She could only be on SoA. Her final scene with Opie. Man.

AGREED on everything you say!

And Stahl! Just wow. She was fricking amazing, and while she scared me, she also fascinated me to no ends. This person who is so completely obsessed with her career (or taking down SAMCRO), who, let's be honest here, is definitely a sociopath. But by the gods she was compelling and mesmerising. Her final scene with Opie was three seasons of build culminating this complete gut punch. There was no other way, but wow, how terrifying and satisfying.

Soooo, what you're saying is, watch Justified? :D

If you need Community, I have it all! I want my own Annie and Troy and Abed. Apparently I have to settle for watching them on the TV, though.

Yes, definitely! I've got heaps of uni work in the next two weeks, and also my store is shutting down(!), but as soon as those things clear up I will actually have a weekend day free for once. I can make some brownies.

That would be awesome! I can cook dinner, lunch or whatever it is you end up eating while here.

(Also, I heard about your bookstore shutting down.)
