Janny Wurts - Alliance of Light

So, wass' up?

My life, in the past 3 days, have consisted of eating, sleeping and reading the last two books in Janny Wurts' Alliance of Light series. Yes, Janny Wurts is a really wordy author and normally I wouldn't give any of her books any notice (Robin Hobb, gods, I hate that series). However, I read the first two books over 15 years ago (I was sick and weak, and needed a distraction), and somehow (through the LEGION of pointless words) I fell in love with Arithon.

My initial reaction to finding out that the last two books was out - ARITHON!!! <3!!!! MUST HAVE!!!!

*15+ hours later*

I wish somebody else had written these novels. *IGNORE and FORGET the bulk of the books and just think HAPPY thoughts about Arithon!!!*

Oh wow. Really. Arithon. Yes.

I have met Janny, and spent most of a World Fantasy Con with her. She was an enormous influence in my writing, both for good reasons and not. It's a very long story. I never would have started writing fanfiction if not for her. HEAT was a direct result of her mentoring me during that con.

Anyway. I have not read past Traitor's Knot. Is the series finally wrapped up?

I love Arithon, and would like to wrap him up in fluffy blankets and feed him chicken soup. (Except I suspect he'd try and bite my head off, but so worth it).

See, my relationship with Wurts' books is a love/hate relationship. I love her world, her characters and her plots, but her writing style, at times, makes me want to scream. Mostly, I need to be in right mood to really enjoy her style.

She sounds pretty damn awesome.

Stormed Fortress is last in Arc 3, but I'm pretty sure there will be a future arc.

Your relationship with her books sums up my time spent with her. If you think about her writing style, then imagine her helping you with your writing? Yes. That. The less said the better! She was very gracious and friendly outside talking 'work' though.

At that con she was artist GOH, and shipped a bunch of her work for display. The original painting of the cover for Grand Conspiracy is absolutely gorgeous. Arithon? I died. And seeing him as she painted him, knowing she also created him was awesome.

Also, is it sick to slash him with his brother? It's been so long since I read these books, and I was not slashing anyone back then, so I have no idea. Thoughts?

HAHAHA. I can see your point there.

Also, her depiction of Arithon and her paintings of him make me deliriously happy. Just gods, he is soooooo beautiful.

OMFG! I WANT to SLASH Arithon with EVERYONE in the books. He HURTS so very good. He is tiny, has black hair, green eyes, and suffers so beautifully. Arithon and Lysear. Though I admit that I REALLY wanted Davien and Arithon to get it on and have some amazing sex.

But back to Arithon and Lysear - their first meeting was absolutely amazing, the way their relationship unfolded from that point was glorious, and I felt so bad for Lysear post the curse. However, by book 4 I was actively campaigning for his death. I know it isn't his fault, but man I just wanted him to die (hell, to end his own pain). The problem with Arithon and Lysear is that I can't see a happy ending for them, hell, I can't even make it plausible for them to have a sexual relationship even before the curse was cast. I think this is mostly to due with Lysear basic markeup (good, pure, the light, representing justice, blah, blah).

... Unless they somehow warp the curse in regards to Lysear so that it somehow turns into possessiveness rather than murderous rage. I can, um, definitely see Lysear hunting down Arithon and locking him up so that no one can reach him. Sure, it doesn't have to start sexual, but it wouldn't surprise me if it morphs into something more (and way darker). Dammit, now I'm thinking of Lysear locking Arithon in a gilded cage of silk and velvet, chains locking him to the floor, and holding everyone he loved as hostage for good behavious. Ohhh.

(Also, a VERY important plot point happen in the last book).

You just killed me. I'm dead. It's been years since I read them, and I want this NOW!!!

Yes, the first book and how their relationship unfolded was amazing. She created something truly special.

Since I'm not going to read the last two books any time soon, can you give me that spoiler?! Please?

Me too! I want this like I need food and sleep. Just think of all the fucked up things that Lysear would do in an attempt to 'protect' Arithon. Or, how Arithon can only sing for him and that if he have to he will break Arithon's fingers to save him. Just - the POSSIBILITIES.

- Arithon manages to break the curse. A plea to the Paravians that was answered.
- Lysear is still cursed, however, he is starting to realise what he has done.
- Sulfin Evend continues to be more awesome than everyone else.
- Fionn Areth died in defence of Alestron.
- Sethvir regained his strength.
- Elaira & Arithon gets together.
- Davien awakens one of the dragons, and returns to the fold of the wizards (kind of)
- Arithon got a chick pregnant (not Elaira), he does not know this as he thought he slept with Elaira, but there was a curse/or something on Elaira that if she and Arithon do have sex she would conceive, and the Sisterhood can claim the child. So, in short, got another woman to sleep with Arithon to save him, and of course she is not pregnant with a daughter. I kid you not.

There is more but honestly these are the ones I can currently remember.

Oh gods yes. YES!

As for the spoilers? Wow. Thank you!

Don't even know what to say about Elaira and Arithon. I loved them in Ships of Merior. But that was before I put on my slash goggles. And this pregnancy thing? O_O Sounds like a plot from a bad romance novel.

I wish I could write fiction, I would write thousands of words about Arithon.

The pregnancy thing was really bad. I really wish it hadn't happened. Also, I think I want a female hero who is barren in my next fantasy series who is well adjusted, happy and likes children without bitterness even if she can't have any of her own. Because I really want a change.

Arithon ♥

I still haven't read the last one (came out a couple of years ago) but it's on my bookshelf! Has there been a new one since then?

I love Arithon and these books so much! I organise my bookshelf by books I like (bottom shelves) up to books I really really like (middle shelves) up to books I love FOREVER (top shelves; double stack on the front of middle shelves). The Alliance of Light books are up on the very top shelf :3

by the way have I mentioned lately that my husband IS Arithon? ;P check out this comparison picture (ignore the Assassin's Creed stuff and look at the right hand side). :3
