The Interwebs is for Pron - TUMBLR is NOT for Fics!

The title is slightly misleading.

I'm going through a bit of a neurotic/clean-up phase, which has reached into my on-line life. So, taking stock of my on-line life. I have;
  • This lj account, which I don't update as often as I use to, but is great to keep track of fandom, fics and other interesting bits.

  • A Tumblr account, which I love for the instantaneous visual reaction. I find all my good visual-crack on tumblr. My use of tumblr goes from chipmunk on acid to none-existence.

  • A pinboard account, which I'm repopulating with new fics.

  • 2 Dreamwidth accounts (one is super-duper top-secret), and one which is under the same moniker as my lj account.

In short, I'm still spending a shit-tonne of time on-line reading/reblogging fandom-related things, I'm just spread across multiple platforms. In my stalker-like activities I've noticed an increase of fics being updated on tumblr, which brings me to my new pet-peeve.

Pet Peeve - Fics on Tumblr, this ain't the 90's, I don't miss tripod, geocities or the other one
  • Disclaimer - I can read short drabbles on Tumblr, less that 500 words, any more and I hit the back button.

  • Tumblr is awesome for graphics, and instantaneous feedback for fandom related items. It is, however, NOT the best service for fics/words. Texts on funky backgrounds does NOT equal a good reading experience. Please learn some fucking basic design sensibility.

  • The tagging system is awesome on Tumblr - it is simple but powerful. However, this is not a good thing for fic-searching. In fact it is down-right shit and useless.

  • I don't rec or read fics on Tumblr because it is a truly shitty platform for the written word. No, I don't care how awesome or great the fic is, I have limited time and limited energy. If I can't read the text on the background you chose, and if you don't use PARAGRAPH breaks than no, I'm not going to give you the time of the day.

In the words of Kurt Vonnegut:

7. Pity the readers
They have to identify thousands of little marks on paper, and make sense of them immediately. They have to read, an art so difficult that most people don't really master it even after having studied it all through grade school and high school --- twelve long years.

So this discussion must finally acknowledge that our stylistic options as writers are neither numerous nor glamorous, since our readers are bound to be such imperfect artists. Our audience requires us to be sympathetic and patient readers, ever willing to simplify and clarify --- whereas we would rather soar high above the crowd, singing like nightingales.

That is the bad news. The good news is that we Americans are governed under a unique Constitution, which allows us to write whatever we please without fear of punishment. So the most meaningful aspect of our styles, which is what we choose to write about, is utterly unlimited.

... Look, my current, um, immersion in hockey rps will pass (maybe. Gods, I hope so. The shame. You can't comprehend the level of shame.)

I don't actually have a centralised fandom at the moment. Pretty much reading whatever recs sound interesting. It has been, um, strange past week.

What fandoms are you currently reading for?

primarily 1st class at the moment, since it appears to be the most prolific right now. basically i go where the most fic can be found.

but i'm finding tumblr awesome for fanart and links. (yeap, can't stand reading fic on it either) all the marvel stuff you've been putting up is pretty awesome, even if i don't follow the fandom fanatically

Really? I'm finding that 1st is slowing down (most likely because I was reading in it right from the beginning, and gods, the amount of things that were being generated was insane), the amount of fic being produced in that fandom is weaning. There appear to be more and more Marvel fics in the past month or so - blame this on the Thor, Captain America movies and the Avengers film trailer. I tell you, when the Avengers film finally get released the internet is going to explode with the amount of fics it will generate. It is going to be awesome.

You should read Glee fics, specifically the Kurt and Blaine ones, the ship is practically made for you. Young boys in love, all cute and adorable with a dash of angst. Oh, and a private school for most of season 2. Don't watch the show, just read the fics, or the youtube vids of Blaine performing Teenage Dreams to Kurt on THEIR FIRST MEETING. Blaine is dapper, but as the season progresses we find out that he is a bit of a failboat.

Tumblr is awesome that way, but it really isn't a good platform for conversations and serious discussion. It is an awesome scrapbook platform.
